How to Choose Fish Oil Formulations | TG, EE and rTG Comparison
How to Choose Fish Oil Formulation? TG, EE & rTG Full Comparison
There are three main types of fish oil supplements on the market: Triglyceride (TG), Ethyl Ester (EE) and Re-esterified Triglyceride (rTG). They differ greatly in structure, purity, absorption and user experience.
1. Triglyceride (TG)
TG is the natural original form of fish oil. It is gentle on the digestive system and offers good bioavailability. The main downside is relatively low purity of active ingredients.
2. Ethyl Ester (EE)
EE fish oil is made via chemical purification with high active ingredient concentration and large dosage per capsule. However, its absorption rate drops significantly when taken on an empty stomach. Some users may suffer from acid reflux and fishy aftertaste.
3. Re-esterified Triglyceride (rTG)
rTG combines the strengths of TG and EE. It is highly purified first, then converted back into a natural triglyceride structure with a purity of 70% to 95%.
- Bioavailability is close to natural TG fish oil
- Stable absorption whether taken with food or on an empty stomach
- Minimal gastrointestinal irritation and low risk of fishy reflux
Overall, rTG is the most well-rounded fish oil formulation available today.
