Recommended Daily Intakes of DHA from Major Authoritative Organizations
DHA is an essential polyunsaturated fatty acid for human health. Below are the official recommended daily DHA intakes for infants, pregnant women, lactating mothers and adults released by top global and Chinese authorities.
1. Chinese Nutrition Society (Dietary Reference Intakes for Chinese Residents, 2023)
- Infants and young children aged 0–3 years: 100 mg DHA per day (Adequate Intake, AI)
2. Expert Consensus on DHA Supplementation for Pregnant Women, Lactating Mothers, Infants, and Young Children (2021)
- Pregnant and lactating women: ≥200 mg DHA per day
- Children aged 0–3 years: ≥100 mg DHA per day
3. FAO/WHO (Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations / World Health Organization)
- Infants aged 0–6 months: 100–150 mg DHA per day (or 0.3–0.5% of total fatty acids)
- Children aged 6–24 months: 10–12 mg/kg body weight per day (approximately 80–144 mg DHA daily)
- Pregnant and lactating women: ≥200 mg DHA per day
4. Safety Limit for Algal Oil DHA (Chinese Ministry of Health Announcement No. 3, 2010)
The upper safety limit for algal-oil-derived DHA is 300 mg per day for the general adult population.
